HEELS 2 Transition (H2T) programs support transition-aged young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) toward a fulfilling and self-empowered adult life. H2T is a multidisciplinary collaboration between the CIDD, School of Education, TEACCH Autism Program, School of Allied Health Sciences, Kidpower International and other community partners. HEELS Prep is a 7 week-long opportunity for emerging adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) to build skills in preparation for adulthood, and set goals for a promising future. The program addresses key skill areas of the transition to adulthood, including career exploration, self-management, social participation, independent living, and safety.

HEELS UP is an abridged inclusive postsecondary education (IPSE) program to be piloted during Summer Session (SS) II. HEELS UP will provide opportunities for young adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) to experience campus life and address goals for personal and professional growth. The program is designed to further career planning and preparation through inclusive coursework and academic coaching related to individual goals based on person centered planning. Programs such as this one are growing across the country, providing a successful college experience for youths with IDD. (www.thinkcollege.net)

The HEELS Bridge program serves to “bridge” the transition to inclusive higher education settings, for those seeking enrollment in HEELS UP or other post-secondary education programs. Through an emphasis on access, self-determination, and self-directed exploration, the program prepares individuals to maximize the benefits of a college experience.
